China to Start New Round of Regulation on Games, Internet Cafes

China's Ministry of Culture (MOC) has ordered all local cultural administrative departments to launch a new round of regulatory tightening running from December 15 to March 15. The focus of this campaign will be determine who is responsible for monitoring the online gaming market, and to crack down on unlicensed Internet cafes and Internet cafes that admit minors. The MOC's notification also ordered all online and mobile music operators to increase their self-regulation. The MOC also ordered local cultural administrative departments to report back to the Ministry of Culture's Cultural Marketing Department on the state of their development and operation of an online game company self-regulation system. Local administrative departments will also be required to give a summary of the results of this activity to the Cultural Marketing Department by March 31, 2010.
