Baidu Recruits Foreign Language Engineers

Sina Tech, 12/22/09

Chinese online search firm Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) web search department is hiring graduate engineering interns to do grammar research for seven languages, including German, French, Russian, Farsi, Turkish, Arabic, and Malaysian. These languages are primarily spoken in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

This recruitment is in response to business demands. Engineers will be responsible for the grammatical annotation of their corresponding language and cataloging of the language's grammatical characteristics. They will also be responsible for surveys into the search habits of those who speak each language, including collecting and analyzing search behavior and characteristics. Baidu engineers say that currently there are very few searches performed in those seven languages, and that this recruitment effort is an attempt to build a larger collection of research data.

Previously, Baidu CEO Robin Li stated that 2012 was Baidu's target date to compete head-to-head with Google overseas.
