Rumor: China Mobile to Extend TD-SCDMA Coverage to 330 Cities

Sina Tech, 12/29/09

According to informed sources, the fourth stage of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) TD-SCDMA network construction will take place next year. In this stage, network capacity will be increased in cities that already have TD-SCDMA coverage, and coverage will be extended to cities that do not yet have it. Upon completion of the fourth stage of network construction, the total number of cities with TD-SCDMA coverage is expected to reach 330.

Editor's Note: China Mobile has announced that the third stage of its TD-SCDMA rollout is complete. 70% of prefecture-level cities nationwide have TD-SCDMA coverage, including 100% of such cities in east China. More than 100,000 TD-SCDMA base stations have been deployed, and the level of core coverage is approaching that of 2G service.
