Rumor: China Mobile to Buy RMB 21 Bln in Equipment from Taiwan

According to Taiwan's Commercial Times, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) deputy GM Sha Yuejia will travel to Taiwan in late March to meet with over ten telecom equipment vendors, including MediaTek, Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW) and HTC. The delegation will discuss the potential purchase of up to NTD 100 bln (RMB 21.3 bln) in telecommunications equipment.
Editor’s Note: Sina Tech reports that Sha will travel with representatives of Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) and Datang Telecom (600198.SH) to add over 10 firms including Foxconn, MediaTek, VIA Technologies and HTC to its list of suppliers. China Mobile expects to make large-scale 3C product procurements in Taiwan this year, including 3G (TD-SCDMA) and 4G (TD-LTE) e-readers, handsets and network devices.
China Mobile, along with firms in Taiwan’s TD-LTE industry chain, is also expected to announce in early April the joint establishment of a TD-LTE trial network in Taiwan.
