Ku6 to Spin Off Licensed Video Website, Keep Uploads

Sina Tech, 3/11/10

Chinese video website Ku6 has announced it will spin off a new website, Juchang.com ("Ku6 Theater"), to deliver licensed long-form video content including TV and films, while continuing to provide an online video-sharing platform for shorter video content at Ku6.com.

Ku6 CEO Kevin Li (Li Shanyou) described Juchang as "China's Hulu," while Ku6 would retain a model similar to YouTube. Ku6 would encourage user video sharing but not allow uploading lengthy video content, while Juchang will provide legal long-form content.

Ku6 has licensed the broadcasting rights to about 3,600 television programs as well as approximately 4,200 films, and claims to hold the rights to 70% of 2010's most anticipated programming. Ku6 has signed contracts licensing the rights to the latest TV versions of China's four great classical novels: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, Journey to the West and Dream of the Red Chamber.
