Rumor: Google to Shut Google.cn By End of March

China Entrepreneur, 3/12/10

Google.cn will shut down at the end of March, according to a Google China keyword advertising client, who learned of the news in a phone call from Google's advertising department on the morning of March 11. The client reported being told that advertising spend from Google.cn could be transferred to a campaign on Google.com, or be refunded to the customer. Existing campaign contracts with Google.cn or its agencies will be transferred to another agency. Customer service staff at Google China will be retained, while the sales team will be transferred to Hong Kong.

A Google public relations representative said negotiations with Chinese authorities are ongoing, and that not only was the public relations department unaware of any such announcement, but that upon inquiry, other relevant Google departments also reported having no knowledge of any plans to close Google.cn.
