Google's Fate May Hang on ICP License Review

CCID, 3/17/10

Foreign media have reported that Google's fate in China will be determined during its ICP (Internet Content Provider) license review this month. All Internet content providers in China must renew their license with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in order to continue operating. According to Shawn Zhao, Google's managing counsel for the China region, the review may be delayed until April. Jessica Powell, Google's spokeswoman in Tokyo, said licenses are generally up for renewal this month but declined to comment on whether Google intends to pursue renewal.

Editor's Note: Yao Jian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, recently said that regardless of whether Google decides to remain in China, it must comply with Chinese regulations. Yao said that if Google.cn is shut down, Google must submit prior notification to the Ministry of Commerce. The Ministry has yet to receive any such notification.
