Rumor: Google to Launch TD-SCDMA Nexus One in China
Southern Metropolitan News, 3/31/10
Reports yesterday claimed that Google plans to bring its Nexus One handset to the China market as a TD-SCDMA phone. Google has yet to make any official announcement as to whether or not it will bring the smartphone to the China market, but Wu Zhengguang, VP of HTC's mainland handset subsidiary Dopod, had previously revealed that the Nexus One would be officially released domestically in March or April of this year as the Dopod T8188. This model number is listed on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) network access permit website, indicating that the phone has already received a network access permit.
A source inside China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) said that the new phone might not be heavily customized for China Mobile, and that it would retain its original operating system, and would not be marketed as an OPhone. Neither China Mobile nor Dopod would reveal whether or not the phone would support TD-SCDMA, or whether there would be any other differences in the hardware specifications.
