MIIT Denies Possible Restart of WAP Billing

CCTIME, 4/21/10

Sources within China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have denied recent reports that the three major mobile carriers will soon reopen WAP service billing, which is currently suspended. At most, said the source, the carriers will be able to selectively reopen service to an extremely small number of legitimate WAP sites, but that related regulatory polices have not been eased, and that there is no chance that mobile carriers would make the decision to restore large-scale WAP service billing on their own, without authorization.

Several wireless value-added service provider (SP) executives have also said that they have not received any notice of changes from the mobile operators.
