Handsets Take 75% of Unicom's 3G Terminal Orders

C114, 4/21/10

Gu Minxia, director of the China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) Technology Division's standards department, said at today's 2010 Wireless Telecommunications Applications (International) Forum in Beijing that handsets account for 75% of China Unicom's WCDMA customized terminal orders, with data cards and netbooks representing only 15% and 10% respectively. 37% of handset orders are for high-end phones (priced at RMB 3,000 or higher), while 63% are for mid-range or low-end handsets. Gu said China Unicom urgently needs more handsets in every price range, especially low-end smartphones priced at RMB 1,000 or less, that use a unified mobile application interface (such as Widgets) as much as possible.
