Shanda Slams Baidu for Aiding Literature Piracy

Tencent Tech, 4/27/10

Shanda Literature, the online literature subsidiary of Chinese internet company Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq: SNDA), recently released a new report, the "2010 Bluepaper on Online Literature in China." The Bluepaper names the "Ten Biggest Pirate Sites" for online content - singling out Chinese search company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) as well as its Baidu Post Bar forums and "Wenku" document sharing service, as well as Xiaoshuo520.com, BookSky.org, 16Kbook.com, Bookge.com, e-book search site Sodu.org, and Soso999.com.

The Bluepaper is reportedly based on figures from surveys of Rongshuxia.net and other Shanda Literature subsidiary sites. The report notes that more than 80% of netizens have read pirated e-books, while more than 70% of netizens believe that search engines are a means to access pirated content, and that search engines have a duty to monitor, delete, and block pirated content.
