Google China Stops Redirecting to Hong Kong
Sina Tech, 6/29/10
Google senior VP and chief legal representative David Drummond announced on the official Google blog today that Google China's Internet Content Provider (ICP) license will expire on June 30 and has not yet been renewed. Without an ICP license, Google will no longer be allowed to operate Google.cn, which currently automatically reroutes to Google.com.hk.
Drummond said that Chinese authorities have stated that the ICP license will not be renewed if Google continues to redirect traffic.
With one day remaining before the renewal deadline, Google has decided to no longer reroute users to Google.com.hk, instead providing an image of the Google search box on the Google.cn landing page that links to Google.com.hk, where users can continue to use Google.cn services such as Google Music and translation tools, in addition to web search.
Drummond added that Google will completely halt automatic redirection for the next several days and only provide the new landing page as it resubmits its ICP license application.
