CCTV Exposes Baidu for Serving Fake Drug Sites

Beijing Morning Post, 7/19/10

China Central Television's "Weekly Quality Report" recently ran an expose on Chinese search providers, including Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), that had provided online advertising services to fake pharmaceutical websites.

According to the report, a suspect involved in operating one of the fake drug sites told Wuhan police that employees claiming to work for Baidu's paid search ranking business had actively contacted the site, offering to sell several keywords. The suspect reported that of the site's more than RMB 400,000 in fake drug sales, approximately RMB 300,000 was spent in advertising on Baidu.
