Beijing Newsstands Stop Selling China Unicom Recharge Cards

Legal Evening News, 7/26/10

Reporters found recently that recharge cards for China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) mobile phones were no longer on sale at the more than 2,000 newspaper stands throughout Beijing. A spokesperson for the newspaper stand management company confirmed that cards were no longer available both because the company had been unable to reach an agreement with China Unicom, and as part of an effort to "standardize" the company's operations. Notices will reportedly be issued to all newspaper stands between now and late July saying that newspaper stand owners will be responsible for selling off any recharge cards they have in stock. The spokesperson said that the cessation of recharge card sales might only be temporary, and that sales could resume if the two companies were to reach an agreement.

A China Unicom customer support representative said today that they had not yet received any notice from management of cards no longer being sold in newspaper stands.
