NetDragon Investigates Silent SMS Scandal

TechWeb, 8/04/10

Mobile software developer Boyuan Wireless Websoft Technology, a subsidiary of Fuzhou-based online game developer and operator NetDragon Websoft (0777.HK), has responded to recent rumors that its mobile client 91 Baibaoxiang ("Treasure Chest") secretly sends SMS messages without the user's knowledge. Currently, Boyuan has received no complaints from users in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or overseas, but has begun an investigation.

Some internet users have recently reported that after installing the 91 Baibaoxiang mobile application on their iPhones, the software sent a constant stream of SMS messages in the background to two phone numbers: 158800484** and 158800486**, racking up over RMB 100 in data fees in a single month.
