Rumor: Baidu Testing Open Application Platform

New Express, 8/20/10

An industry rumor claims Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) is developing an open platform for web applications, and that some major websites and developers have been invited to test out the platform.

Chinese arts and literature review site Douban is reportedly partnering with Baidu on a "search-and-use" product, and is preparing to repackage its "Douban Radio" service as an internet application and move it to the search engine. Once the process is complete, netizens who search for "Douban Radio" on Baidu will see a Douban Radio player interface in their search results. The product has reached the internal beta testing stage. A number of website developers are reportedly partnering on similar efforts at present in areas including games, downloads, anti-virus, social networks, and shopping.
