Baidu-Rakuten JV May Launch as Early as October

Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) B2C e-commerce joint venture with Japanese firm Rakuten, "Lekutian" (rakuten.com.cn), recently disclosed to overseas media that its website will launch in the first half of October at the earliest. The JV's workforce, currently less than 100, is estimated to reach 1,000 within three years.
Chairman and CEO Koichi Nakamura said that response has been better than expected at informational events for potential sellers in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Shanghai, and that Rakuten.com.cn will have thousands of merchants by the time it launches.
