Beijing Unicom Begins Instant Messaging Trials

CCTIME, 10/14/10

According to Beijing Unicom's website, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has begun operations of its instant-messaging service in Beijing - but the service is only available at present to prepaid subscribers. A Beijing Unicom announcement the day before yesterday said that the IM service would launch at a cost of RMB 5 per month, but that in order to drive user adoption, use of the service will remain completely free until December 31 of this year. Users of the service can send up to 150 messages a day from their PC clients to other users of the IM service. Beijing Unicom will also give users an additional 50 free messages per number per month.

According to Beijing Unicom, the IM service enjoys the three key advantages of seamless messaging between PCs and mobile phones, inter-network SMS connectivity, and the display of incoming messages as coming from the subscriber mobile number tied to the IM account.
