China's 3G Subscribers Reach 39 Mln

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) yesterday revealed that as of the end of October, China had reached 38.64 mln 3G mobile subscribers. Of these, 10 mln were China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) CDMA2000 EV-DO subscribers, 16.98 mln were China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) TD-SCDMA subscribers, and 11.66 mln were China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) WCDMA subscribers. TD-SCDMA users accounted for 43.9% of total 3G subscribers, with the total number of new 3G users in 2010 to date reaching 25.38 mln.

Editor's Note: Of China Mobile's 16.98 mln TD-SCDMA subscribers, Marbridge estimates that 30-35% are wireless wireline users. Of China Unicom's 11.66 mln WCDMA subscribers, 10.65 mln, or 91.4% were handset users, and the remainder data card (including netbook) users.
