Rumor: China Telecom to Launch Voice-Based Microblog

Beijing Morning Post, 2/16/11

A source at China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) said that the operator plans to launch a voice-based microblogging service at the end of the month. The service will allow China Telecom mobile subscribers to post voice updates to their Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogs, after they have registered their mobile number with the service, by dialing 16836502. The number is already available for testing; calls are charged at the standard per-call rates with no additional data service fees.

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has also reached an agreement with Sina Weibo allowing users to post voice updates, and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is actively preparing to launch a voice-microblogging service.
