China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and Chinese internet and WVAS service provider Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) signed a strategic partnership agreement in Beijing today covering R&D, telecommunications services, and marketing and sales. Specifically, the agreement calls for:
1) Joint development of products derived from Sina's Sina Weibo microblogging service, e-commerce, search services, mapping and location services, and other value-added services.
2) Unicom to provide Sina with core communication services including voice, IDC, network resources, and value-added platform services.
3) The two companies to work on channel partnerships, joint sales promotions, and other coordinated marketing arrangements.
Sina and Unicom had previously worked together to launch "Voice Weibo" for Sina, which allowed users to post recorded voice messages on their microblogs. China Unicom will also launch a "Video Weibo" product allowing Unicom users to upload videos shot on their handsets' cameras directly to Weibo.
