Rumor: China Telecom, Apple Reach Preliminary iPhone Deal

A source at a China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) provincial subsidiary claimed recently that the operator had reached an initial agreement with Apple under which the CDMA version of the iPhone will come to China by next year at the latest, and possibly as soon as this October.
China Telecom could simultaneously offer the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, analogous to China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) decision to simultaneously offer the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.
Employees at all China Telecom provincial subsidiaries are reportedly receiving training for CDMA iPhone sales.
