Rumor: Ganji Shutters Group Buy Business

DoNews, 3/09/12

An industry source revealed today that Chinese online listings website Ganji has abandoned its group buy business as the result of overall adjustments to its services.

Over the year it has been in operation, Ganji's group buy business has grown to employ more than 600 people, with more than 200 at the company's Beijing headquarters, and the remainder in charge of local sites around the country.

Since the Lunar New Year holiday in late January, the source said, Ganji has transferred only a small number of its group buy team to other positions. The remaining employees have for the most part been dismissed by the company.

A source in Ganji's group buy department who was familiar with the situation confirmed the report.

Ganji reportedly invested nearly RMB 80 mln in its group buy service since it launched last year.
