MIIT to Allow Private-sector Investment in Telecom Infrastructure

21st Century Business Herald, 3/09/12

On March 8, former Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) minister Li Yizhong said in an interview with China Business News that the government had internally settled on a timetable for private-sector investment in telecommunications infrastructure, and that MIIT was currently drafting the details of the plan.

During China's negotiations over its entry into the WTO, telecommunications infrastructure was one of the areas the government said that it would not immediately open. Chinese private-sector capital has been active at the second-tier operator level of the telecommunications industry, primarily in the area of such value-added services as content services and information technology services.
