Rumor: China Mobile Earns 2011 Video Revenues of RMB 1 Bln
CCID, 4/17/12
A source in China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) revealed that the company's mobile video revenues in 2011 reached RMB 1.07 bln. In 2010, Chinese mobile phone video-based revenue surpassed RMB 500 mln, compared to RMB 170 mln in 2009. Since the establishment of mobile video in 2005, the number of users and revenue has doubled every year. Since April 1, 2009, China Mobile eliminated the data traffic charges for mobile video users so that users only had to pay for the corresponding pay-per-view fees or monthly account fees.
China Mobile yesterday kicked off the third "G ke G pai" 3G video event in Shanghai. "G ke G pai" allows self-produced video to be uploaded from a mobile handset. Viewers can then pay RMB 2 to watch, with the video creator earning up to 20% of revenues generated from the sale. This year, the number of "G ke G pai" video partners increased from previous years, with current partners including CCTV's national online TV station CNTV, Tudou (Nasdaq: TUDO), Youku (NYSE: YOKU), Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), and Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) joint-venture online video site iQiyi.
