Tencent Tests Video, Voice Calling for Weixin

Sohu IT, 7/06/12

Chinese internet firm Tencent (0700.HK) has begun internally testing a new version of its mobile messaging app Weixin for iOS 4.2 that supports voice and video calling. Both the speaker and listener must have installed Weixin for iOS 4.2 and connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi or 3G. Video calls can only be placed to others that the user has been communicating with in the past 10 minutes, otherwise only a video call invitation can be sent, to prevent sudden unwanted video calls.

Tencent also plans to launch a web version of Weixin (next.qq.com), but has yet to announce a launch date for the new iOS 4.2 client.
