AliCloud Angles for Minority Shares in Handset Vendors

Sohu IT, 7/09/12

Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Group subsidiary Alibaba Cloud Computing ("AliCloud"), revealed recently that AliCloud is in talks with a number of handset manufacturers about acquiring minority stakes in hopes of establishing footholds at all levels of the industry ecosystem. AliCloud had previously talked with Beijing-based handset vendor Tianyu Communication Equipment (K-Touch) about an equity partnership, but has no plans to merge with the company. Wang said that no details could be divulged at this point. In June, an industry source claimed that AliCloud would merge with Tianyu, but the report was swiftly denied by AliCloud.
