Baidu to Develop Next Generation Navigation Technology

DoNews, 8/11/12

Chinese internet and wireless services company Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) technology division is reportedly at work on developing next-generation navigation technology it calls "coordinated navigation" capable of intelligently evaluating routes. A spokesperson for the project said that the "coordinated navigation" system will be developed based on GPS remote-sensing technology and 3G communications networks connected in real-time through Baidu's cloud services.

Information including users' driving routes and speed will be reported to Baidu's cloud servers over GPS and 3G networks, and will be automatically mined and analyzed by the system to determine whether or not there are any traffic jams or other abnormalities ahead. The system will help users find the optimal driving route given current road conditions, and will recommend optimal routes to users with similar commute routes. In the event of an emergency, users can request assistance from an emergency center or nearby cars.
