Baidu Wenku Fined RMB 145K for Copyright Infringement

DoNews, 9/17/12

Beijing Haidian District People's Court has ruled in a lawsuit brought by the Writers Legal Rights Protection Coalition against Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) that Baidu must pay RMB 145,000 in damages for copyright infringement, rejecting the Coalition's request for RMB 1.81 mln in compensation.

The court determined that as an online storage platform, it is not Baidu Wenku's responsibility to pre-screen or monitor uploads by users, and rejected the Coalition's requests that it order Baidu close the platform and issue a public apology on its homepage.
