China to Allocate 2.6GHz Spectrum for TD-LTE

Caixin.com, 10/15/12

Xie Cun, deputy director of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) State Radio Regulatory Commission (SRRC), recently disclosed during the TD-LTE technology and spectrum forum at the ITU Telecom World 2012 conference in Dubai that China has allocated the 2.6GHz frequency band ranging from 2500-2690Hz for TD-LTE.

A source within China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has revealed that China Mobile's outdoor base stations primarily use the 2.6GHz range, while indoor base stations use 2.3GHz and in some areas use the 1.9GHz range. "China Mobile is currently aiming to acquire the 700-800MHz range, which is used by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) and will be unavailable until 2015, when analog TV broadcasting will cease.

Editor's Note: According to a separate report from the 21st Century Business Herald, the bandwidth of 190MHz suggests that more than one operator will receive an allocation, with China Telecom the most likely second candidate.
