China Unicom Lowers iPhone 4, iPhone 4S Contract Prices

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) announced today that it would launch a nationwide contract promotion for 8 GB iPhone 4 and 16 GB iPhone 4S handsets, effective immediately. The contract price for the 8 GB iPhone 4 has been lowered by RMB 1,300 to RMB 3,699, while the contract price for the 16 GB iPhone 4S was lowered RMB 981 to RMB 4,899.

China Unicom will still offer 10 contract plan options, with the barrier to entry lowered for some of the free-handset plans. The two-year contract for the free 8 GB iPhone 4 now requires subscribers to commit to an RMB 226 monthly plan, as opposed to the previous RMB 286 monthly plan requirement, while the 36-month contract option lowers the minimum plan requirement from RMB 186 per month to RMB 156. The 36-month free-handset plan for the 16 GB iPhone 4S now requires an RMB 226 monthly subscription, down from the previous RMB 286 monthly subscription.
