Baidu Promotes PC Browser on Homepage

Sina Tech, 11/09/12

Beginning around November 6, Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has begun a low key promotion for the company's PC browser client. Upon loading Baidu's homepage in IE or Google Chrome, some mainland Chinese users will be prompted to download Baidu's PC browser by a small banner ad in the top right-hand corner of their screens.

Editor's Note: Visiting the official website for Baidu's PC browser (liulanqi.baidu.com), Marbridge found that Baidu had not released a new version of its PC browser since September 21. One of the key strengths of rival search engines Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) and Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) Sogou is the traction enjoyed by each of their respective browsers, ranking #2 and #3 in China's PC browser market (by traffic) behind only Internet Explorer. Baidu's browser, in contrast, does not rank even among the top 12 (the #12 browser, CoolNovo, held only 0.05% of PV and 0.03% of UV during the month of October). Sogou recently revealed that roughly 60% of its search traffic comes via its browser.
