Tesco China to Establish E-Commerce Platform in H1 2013

DoNews, 12/07/12

Paul Ritchie, chief executive officer of Tesco China, said in a December 6 interview that Tesco intends to officially launch an online shopping platform in H1 2013 offering food and general items. Ritchie added that as Tesco plans to develop its own logistics and delivery system, deliveries will initially be limited to the Shanghai region until the company expands its coverage nationwide.

Ritchie revealed that Tesco has no intention of scaling back its operations in the China market, noting that within the current financial year (from March 2012 to the end of February 2013), Tesco plans to open 18 new stores in China. As of November 2012, the company had 108 outlets in 46 cities around China, as well as one Tesco megastore, seven Lifespace malls, and 14 trial-phase convenience stores.
