China Telecom Jan-Sep 2012 3G Handset Sales Up 12% YoY

Li Haiqiang, deputy director of China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) terminal subsidiary Tianyi Telecom Terminals' product division, said recently that the operator's monthly CDMA handset sales increased from 4.7 mln units at the start of 2012 to 6.83 mln units in September 2012, for a total of 48 mln units sold over the first nine months of the year, up 12.2% YoY. 3G handsets accounted for 70% of the nearly 200 mln handsets sold nationwide during the first nine months of the year, Li said, predicting that a total of nearly 270 mln 3G handsets sold for all of 2012.
The majority of 3G handsets sold by China Telecom this year were smartphones, Li said. In 2013, the operator will expand its custom handset offerings in multiple directions to include new technologies including longer standby time, larger displays, and IPv6, as well as e-reader handsets, cloud handsets, gaming handsets, and other phones tailored to new services. China Telecom will also partner with Baidu and other internet companies to develop handsets tailored to mobile internet use.
