MIIT Announces 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the year were as follows:

Telecom core service operating revenues were RMB 1076.29 bln (USD 172.76), up 9.0% YoY. Capital expenditure for 2012 came to RMB 361.38 bln (USD 58.01 bln), an 8.5% YoY increase.

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 118.96 mln in 2012 to reach 1.390 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 125.90 mln to 1.112 bln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base decreased by 1.32 mln to 265.90 mln, while the PHS subscriber base declined by 5.60 mln subs to 12.25 mln. 104.38 mln new 3G subscribers were added in 2012 to reach a total 3G user base of 232.80 mln.

Mobile teledensity (phones per 100 people) in 2012 rose to 82.6, up from 73.6 at the end of 2011. Fixed-line teledensity dropped to 20.7 in 2012, down from 21.3 at the end of 2011.

A total of 897.31 bln SMS messages were sent in 2012, up 2.1% YoY. And 69.67 bln MMS messages were sent, increasing by 16.2% YoY.

Broadband added 25.18 mln new registered users in 2012 to reach a total of 175.18 mln. Mobile internet users increased by 130.04 mln in 2012, bringing combined (not total) internet and mobile internet users to 764 mln.

In 2012, the overall price of telecommunication services decreased by 1.9% YoY.
