China Unicom Releases Mobile Card Reader

Sohu IT, 3/08/13

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) launched the personal edition of its "Wo Shua" mobile card reader for commercial use today, and is currently promoting the product on a nationwide scale. Yang Jihuan, Northeast China regional director for China Unicom Payment, said that the reader can be used to check bank card balances, make credit card payments, transfer funds, pay talk-time fees, recharge game card point balances, and pay water, electricity, and gas bills. Owners of the readers can download the "Wo Shua" mobile client to their phones for use with the reader, which plugs into the headphone jack on their mobile headset, and will be able to use the service without having to activate online banking for their existing bank cards.

In addition, Yang said, China Unicom subsidiaries are preparing to invest in marketing and promotional efforts for the new product, including discount policies for contract subscribers and other promotional policies.
