Digione, Baidu Jointly Launch C2B Customized Smartphone

DoNews, 6/20/13

Shenzhen-based handset retailer Digione has partnered with China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) to launch a C2B custom handset product called the "Bai Bian" (literally "100 changes") yesterday. Digione is also cooperating with music group Shuimu Nianhua to offer the "100+ Shuimu Nianhua" edition of the "Bai Bian" handset.

The "Bai Bian" (a.k.a. Digione 100B) comes in multiple colors, runs on Baidu's Baidu Cloud customized Android 4.0 ROM operating system, and features a 5" high definition display, quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM, and an 8MP camera. The dual-mode/dual-standby handset supports both GSM and CDMA2000 EV-DO network standards. Handsets with the most basic configurations are priced at RMB 999, and the "100+ Shuimu Nianhua" edition retails for RMB 1,399.

In April of this year, Digione launched China's first C2B customized handset platform where users could vote on various aspects of handset customization, such as the handset's exterior design, hardware, software, accessories, services, and battery cover. Over 1 mln customers participated in the votes over the course of one month, and the results are the combinations that are currently being offered for the "Bai Bian" handset. Even the handset's name, "Bai Bian," was decided through online voting.

Editor's Note: In April Digione also released a second handset in cooperation with Baidu, the 100AS. The Bai Bian, or Digione 100B, is the third handset the two companies have launched together.
