Rumor: Xiaomi to Release Gaming Device

ChinaByte, 8/24/13

A source at Beijing-based Android device developer Xiaomi has stated that the company is in the process of developing a game console. The product will offer interconnectivity with Xiaomi handsets and smart TVs and could be unveiled as early as September 5 during the company's previously announced product launch conference.

Similar to the company's "Xiaomi Box" TV set-top box (STB), the game console is rumored to run on an Android system, rather than Xiaomi's MIUI Android fork, but will still be able to tap into the MIUI game center and thereby become a component of the MIUI ecosystem. The game console will support mainstream game console controllers as well as Xiaomi handsets to operate games.

Xiaomi began rollout of its MIUI ecosystem last year, and expects the game center to become the ecosystem's largest revenue stream.

Xiaomi has not responded to the rumors.
