Jingdong, Taobao Tighten Policies Against Fake Products

Beijing Business Today, 9/03/13

Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform Jingdong recently released updated regulations for its open-platform service, increasing the severity of penalties for merchants caught selling fake products on the platform. Merchants caught selling counterfeit products will be required to pay a penalty of RMB 100,000, or forfeit their entire Jingdong open platform deposit, whichever sum is higher. The regulations also stipulate that merchants can be banned from the platform.

On August 22, rival e-commerce site Taobao adjusted its merchant point deduction system in an effort to combat fake products. Prior fake goods offenders will have 24 points deducted each time they are caught selling fake products. If merchants lose a total of 48 points, their online shops will be closed.
