Rumor: Alibaba to Pay User Data Fees for Mobile Taobao, Laiwang

Sina Tech, 10/28/13

According to an industry insider, Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group has reached agreements with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) to pay for user data fees generated on the mobile client version of Alibaba's e-commerce site Taobao and the company's mobile instant messaging app Laiwang. The free data arrangement will cover mobile data usage on both China Mobile and China Unicom networks and go into effect within the next several days.

Alibaba began to heavily promote Laiwang in September. The company recently added connectivity between the "Weitao" public accounts channel of the Taobao app and Laiwang.
