China to Issue Regulations for WeChat, Sina Weibo

Economic Daily, 12/04/13

According to Ren Xianliang, Deputy Director of China's State Internet Information Office, the continuous emergence of new broadcasting technology requires continuous improvement of China's internet laws, and as such, China will implement new laws and regulations to govern social media platforms such as Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application and Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogging platform.

Starting in May of this year, the Internet Information Office launched a campaign against online rumors, shutting down rumor-mongering microblogging accounts, and punishing individual offenders. Ren has stated that China will strengthen its internet laws, and raise the effectiveness of internet management.
