Rumor: China Telecom to Launch Large Scale 4G Trials in 40 Cities

Sohu IT, 12/12/13

An industry source has revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has been authorized to begin large-scale 4G network trials in more than 40 cities across China, with initial coverage to be offered in high density locations such as central urban districts, scenic areas, and subway systems. In October of this year, China Telecom completed a 4G core network equipment (LTE evolved packet core) tender. Although the equipment tender covered 31 provinces nationwide, the 4G trials will not be simultaneously launched across the entire country, but will be centralized in more than 40 cities including Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing, and Wuhan.

China Telecom expects to invest approximately RMB 55 bln into 4G construction over the next two years, and has invested RMB 10 bln already this year.

TD-LTE licenses were issued on December 4 to China's three major telecom operators.
