Alibaba Slashes Cloud Computing Prices Up to 50%

Eburn, 12/19/13

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group's cloud services subsidiary, Alibaba Cloud Computing Limited (AliCloud), announced price reductions of up to 50% on to its enterprise cloud servers (ECS), relational database services (RDS), and open storage systems (OSS) on December 18.

Price reductions are primarily geared toward current AliCloud clients who have previously purchased long-term ECS and RDS products. Beginning December 18, the original price for remaining service terms will be reduced to new lower prices, with the difference between the old price and new price offered as a reward amount to existing customers.

For service renewals, beginning December 18, 2013, AliCloud will offer a 10% discount for clients who purchase monthly or annual ECS or RDS continuing service of more than 10 months in duration. A discount of 15% will be offered to service purchases of a continuous duration of over 22 months of service.

AliCloud has also announced it will invest RMB 100 mln to support cloud computing industry partners.

Editor's Note: On December 18, Amazon Web Services announced it would establish a cloud computing platform in China, marking the company's fourth region in the Asia Pacific and tenth region globally, in early 2014 (see "Amazon Web Service to Launch Cloud Computing Platform in China," MD 12/19/20 issue). In response to AWS's announcement, many of China's other cloud service providers have quickly dropped prices. IBM is also active in China's cloud services market, but focuses most heavily on IT companies, so AWS will be most competitive in other, more underserved segments.
