MediaTek: Xiaomi Chipset Technology Leaked to Spreadtrum

TechWeb, 8/13/14

According to Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily, Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek (MTK) has filed a criminal case with local law enforcement authorities, alleging that 10 former employees from the company's product development division have illegally kept technical information related to the chipset technology for Beijing-based Android device maker Xiaomi and subsequently leaked this information to mainland Chinese wireless baseband chipset provider Spreadtrum Communications.

Taiwanese authorities have taken in 9 individuals for questioning, and seized a number of computers and account ledgers as part of the investigation.

A source close to MTK emphasized that the company's cost-cutting strategy for the Xiaomi chipset allows MTK to offer the product at highly competitive prices, and added that if rivals were to learn the details behind this strategy, it would negatively impact MTK's profits.
