China's MIIT Announces H1 2015 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its January to June 2015 telecom industry statistics. Figures for the first six months of the year were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for Jan-Jun 2015 were RMB 679.03 bln (USD 109.53 bln), down 1.2 % YoY, of which core services revenue was RMB 571.37 bln (USD 92.16 bln), up 2.3% YoY. Jan-Jun 2015 capital expenditure was RMB 143.73 bln (USD 23.18 bln), up 5.6% YoY.

Total telephone subscribers decreased by 0.63 mln in June to 1.539 bln. In June, the number of mobile subscribers increased by 0.64 mln to 1.293 bln, while fixed-line subscribers decreased by 1.26 mln to 241.16 mln. Among the mobile subscribers, 3G subscribers saw a drop of 7.39 mln in June, decreasing the total 3G user base to 448.45 mln, and 4G subscribers increased by 24.69 mln to reach a total 4G user base of 225.46 mln.

A total of 361.22 bln SMS messages were sent in Jan-Jun, a 4.7% decrease YoY.

In terms of internet access, China's number of broadband registered accounts increased by 1.51 mln in June, raising the total to 207.02 mln, of which 8M+ registered broadband accounts accounting for 53.4% of all registered broadband accounts, while 20M+ registered broadband accounts accounted for 19.6% of all registered broadband accounts. FTTH subscribers grew by 4.1 mln to 90.07 mln. IPTV subscribers increased by 0.89 mln in June, bringing the total IPTV user base to 38.86 mln.

Mobile internet subscribers saw a net increase of 8.21 mln in June, bringing the total to 905.15 mln.

Driven by the rapid rate of growth in 4G uptake, mobile Internet traffic data consumption spiked dramatically in the first six months of the year. In Jan-Jun, mobile Internet data traffic reached 1.68 bln GB, up 93.6% YoY. Average monthly mobile data traffic usage per mobile subscriber reached 321.5M, up 83.7% YoY. Mobile Internet data traffic from mobile phones (as opposed to that from tablets or other mobile devices) reached 1.506 bln GB during the period, comprising 89.8% of total mobile Internet data traffic.

Fixed-line internet usage increased steadily during the first six months of the year, with total fixed-line broadband access time reaching 24.01 trln minutes, up 23.2% YoY.
