DoNews, 10/23/15

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) has announced that its WeChat mobile messaging app reached 570 mln average daily active users (DAU) in September 2015.

Tencent announced the figure at its 2015 Global Partners Meeting, at which it also shared additional data. Tencent data shows that 60% of WeChat users are between 15-29 years old, and each user has an average of 128 friends. When students graduate and enter the workforce, their WeChat friends increased by 20% on average. WeChat users also amass a total of approximately 280 mln minutes of audio chat daily. Tencent revealed that of those who use the platform for long-distance communication, 58% were youths.

In terms of the platform's monetary gift system WeChat Hongbao ("WeChat Red Envelope"), individuals born in the 1980s are the main users of the service, sending 42% of WeChat Hongbao gifts during this year's Lunar New Year holiday.

In terms of readers on the platform, users born in the 1990s tend to read entertainment and gossip content, and those born in the 1980s read about politics and national affairs. Users read an average of 7 articles per day and one book per month, and 8PM-10PM are core reading hours.

Through the geolocation feature of the platform's social networking feed Moments, Hangzhou's West Lake is the location with the greatest number of user sign-ins in China, and Hong Kong is the overseas location with the greatest number of sign-ins.

In terms of the in-app fitness tracker WeChat Sports, 8PM to 9 PM is the peak active time, workday activity is higher than weekend activity, and data also shows that users have "donated" 167.8 bln steps through the service, generating RMB 33.57 mln for charity. When a user has walked over 10,000 steps in a day, they choose to have some money sent to charity. This money is then sent by organizations partnering with Tencent on this program.

In terms of purchases, more than 2/3 of WeChat consumers are male, and peak purchasing times are 10AM and 10PM.

In terms of games, more than 15% of WeChat users actively play games on the platform, and more than 70% of gamers play more than 10 minutes every day. The most popular games are card games, board games and leisure games.
