CNCERT: China's 2015 Mobile Internet User Base Reaches 780 Mln

China's total number of active mobile Internet users reached 780 mln, or 56.8% of China's population, in 2015, according to a new report from the China Internet Society and the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team (CNCERT).

The top three mobile phone brands used by mobile Internet users were Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi, with 16.76%, 15.78%, and 15.56% of users, respectively. The report reveals that Chinese brands accounted for 6 out of the top 10 mobile smartphone brands used by Chinese mobile Internet users in 2015.

The report says that in 2015, China's active Internet-connected smartphone devices reached 1.13 bln units, among which 78.9% were Android devices and 13.08% were Apple smartphones running iOS.

In 2015 the top three types of Internet services used by Chinese mobile Internet users were social networking, search, and e-commerce services. The most frequently accessed top-level and second-level domain names were Tencent's (0700.HK) qq.com and weixin.qq.com (i.e. WeChat), accounting for 30.34% and 11.95% of website access requests, respectively.

The top three apps used by Chinese mobile Internet users in 2015 were Tencent's WeCchat mobile messaging application, Tencent's QQ messaging app, and Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) Baidu Maps service, which were accessed by 306 mln, 305 mln, and 194 mln users, respectively.

In 2015, CNCERT captured or received from commercial businesses a total of 1,477,450 mobile Internet malicious code samples. In 2015 the total number of mobile Internet malicious programs continued to increase, and grew faster than in 2014. The sources of malicious programs also expanded to include not only mobile app stores but also cloud and online storage services and advertising platforms. In 2015, CNCERT notified 302 app stores, cloud and network storage services, and advertising websites regarding more than 17,000 malicious app incidents.
