JD.com, Electric Car Maker Nio Partner on E-commerce Delivery-to-Vehicle Service

TechWeb, 12/19/17

Shanghai-based new energy vehicle developer Weilai Automobile (Nio) recently announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with Chinese B2C e-commerce platform JD.com (Nasdaq: JD) to offer delivery-to-vehicle services, so that owners of Nio vehicles will be able to receive express package deliveries to the trunk of their vehicle. The service is expected to launch in H1 2018.

JD.com's self-operated logistics service JD Logistics and Nio are in the process of connecting their systems so that consumers will be able to select "delivery to vehicle" when purchasing goods through JD.com. Using the vehicle's location, an authorized delivery agent will deliver the package within a given time window to the recipient's trunk, which will be accessed via keyless entry. Nio will also actively provide security monitoring and protection services for the vehicle after the trunk has been opened.
