Chinese Government Issues New Rules for TV Shopping Ads

7 Chinese government departments have jointly released a notice regarding the reorganization of the TV shopping ad industry. According to the new guidelines, television media sources must legally verify the content found in advertisements. Advertisements for products that have not passed quality inspection tests cannot be aired.
The various agencies issued the notice to address the production and sale of low-quality goods, exaggerated claims, and misleading information found in TV shopping ads which infringe upon the rights of consumers. The new guidelines aim to: (1) strike a serious blow against illegal activity in the TV shopping ad industry, (2) strictly supervise TV shopping operations; (3) increase the trustworthiness of TV shopping channels; (4) increase the strength of social and educational oversight; and (5) establish robust mechanisms to promote the development and effectiveness of TV shopping industry regulations.
The 7 aforementioned government agencies include:
Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM);
Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT);
Ministry of Public Security (MPS);
State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC);
General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSI&Q);
State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT);
and the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).
