Domestic Brands Take 60% of China's Q3 2012 Smartphone Shipments

China's total Q3 2012 smartphone shipments exceeded 50 mln units, according to global market research firm Canalys, with domestic brands - including Lenovo (0992.HK), China Wireless Technologies' (2369.HK) Coolpad, Huawei, and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) - accounting for more than 60%.

Samsung led handset vendors with 14% market share in Q3 2012, followed by Lenovo with 13%, while Coolpad, ZTE and Huawei each had approximately 10%. Apple ranked sixth with 8%.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR), in the first ten months of 2012, domestic brands accounted for 85.8% of TD-SCDMA handsets shipped, 62.7% of WCDMA handsets, and 82% of CDMA2000 handsets.
